WTI dropped as much as 2.8 percent as silver and platinum tumbled. Oil also decreased as gasoline futures slid for a second day from the highest level since September.
“There is a rumor that a fund is blowing up,” said Stephen Schork, president of the Schork Group Inc. in Villanova, Pennsylvania. “Metals are getting hit and it’s spreading over to oil.”
WTI for March delivery, which expires today, dropped $2.17, or 2.2 percent, to $94.49 a barrel at 11:17 a.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The more-active April contract slid $2.13, or 2.2 percent, to $94.97 a barrel. The volume of all futures traded was 53 percent above the 100-day average.
Brent for April settlement dropped $1.69, or 1.4 percent, to $115.83 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange. The volume was 8.1 percent above the 100-day average.
Silver futures for March delivery tumbled as much as 3.4 percent to $28.415 an ounce on the Comex in New York. Gasoline for March delivery decreased 6.76 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $3.0536 a gallon on the Nymex. It settled at $3.1345 on Feb. 15, the highest level since Sept. 28.
